Show features finely crafted ukuleles by guild members as well as a juried ukulele contest. A number of special events will be hosted throughout the month. On Oct. 21, bring your ukulele to a kanikapila at noon. And at noon today (Oct. 13), an ukulele building demonstration will provide an informative view about creating an ukulele. All events are free and open to the public. All special events include a drawing for a free ukulele.

Details: Photographer Melissa Schelling documents the lava evacuation in real time by photographing every day – even while living out of a suitcase. Schelling’s exhibit combines urgent messages from Civil Defense with her images of lava near her house and daily photographs of her two dogs trying to cope with lava trauma.

Details: This international showcase features 76 unique works created using a full range of contemporary approaches to print media and curated through a selection of 582 submissions representing artists from 28 states, Canada and Mexico. A special Black and White Night event will be hosted at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 2 to celebrate with juror Helen Frederick the opening of the exhibit.

Details: This week’s lecture will be an update about rapid ohia death by Corie Yanger with the Komohana Research Center. The Nov. 1 lecture will be presented by Jane Lasswell Hoff, forensic anthropologist and author of “Bones of Paradise, A Big Island Mystery.” She will talk about her new book, “Trees of Banyon Drive.” The cost for the 10-week senior lectures is $10 for all 10 lectures. Details: Part of a Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy research project. Two topics per class will be taught: AIDS/Tuberculosis on Sept. 27, Immunizations/Cancer on Oct. 25 and Diabetes/Antibiotics on Nov. 15. You will be asked if you’d like to participate in a pre- and post-test to see how much you learn from the class for the purpose of our research (completely optional).
